“Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a full evening ballet in two acts by Alexander Ekman, with a score by Mikael Karlsson.
It premiered April 17 2015 with the Royal Swedish Ballet.
It featured the singer Anna von Hausswolff, the Dahlkvist Quartet, pianist Henrik Måwe and percussionist Niklas Brommare.
It has been brought back numerous times at the Royal Swedish Opera, the Joffrey Ballet (Chicago), and is toured by the Dortmund Ballet.
It is the height of summer, the longest day of the year, and everyone gets together to celebrate the most loved of all traditions – Midsummer. Expectations are high, seven kinds of flower must be picked, schnapps must be drunk, and everyone dances giddily around the maypole – perhaps there will even be new love in the air?
It is a night filled of love and eroticism as nature gushes with vitality. The border between the world of mortals and the kingdom of the supernatural becomes thinner and thinner as the bottle becomes emptier and empti- er. Traditions play jokes on us, the world changes and suddenly we are no longer sure – is it all a dream?

“As the curtain rises, Gutierrez and Jaiani join a party in progress, with nearly 50 dancers on their knees, whipping and thrashing a stage full of hay. Behind them, a string quartet, pianist and percussionist play composer Mikael Karlsson’s incredible score.”

“What is especially striking this second time around is the edgy, pop-infused score of Swedish composer Mikael Karlsson with Swedish indie-rock singer Anna von Hausswolf back to providing her alluring, other-worldly vocals, moving amid the action as she sings. The music is performed by an onstage ensemble, including four string players from the Lyric Opera Orchestra.”

“Adding to the production is a guest singer — the Swedish indie rock star Anna von Hausswolff — who serves as a sort of narrator, and members of the superb Lyric Opera Orchestra playing Mikael Karlsson’s wild and wonderful score. Despite all that can be written about this work, the only true way to fully believe its fantastical, ground-breaking, playfully sexy, grand-scale, one-of-a-kind quality is to see it.”
